A gem hidden in plain sight, Mohican Country has a bounty of exciting natural activities
For outdoor enthusiasts, adventure seekers or simply lovers of all things serene, natural and beautiful, Mohican Visitors Bureau invites you and your entire family to Discover Mohican.
“We have something for everyone,” Executive Director Miranda Burrell said. “Whether you crave adventure through hiking, biking, canoeing and camping, a walk through one of our trails or a slow, scenic drive, we have it all. We just encourage everyone to get outdoors and enjoy Mohican, whatever that means for you.”
And, yes, Mohican is still the camping and canoeing capital of Ohio, but it has added a few new attractions over the last four years that may pique your interest.
Swinging footbridge
Located in Mohican State Park, the swinging bridge at Gorge Overlook connects the Hemlock Gorge Trail and Gorge Overlook. The cabled suspension bridge swings freely and provides scenic views as walkers cross over the Mohican River below.
Pump track
In 2022 an all-ages, small mountain bike park was added to the grounds of the Mohican State Park Lodge. The pump track includes several quarter- and half-mile loops, providing adventure for both beginners and the more experienced bikers. Connecting with both mountain trails, gravel areas and the Pleasant Hill dam for a water biking experience, the pump track is a great place for all level bikers to practice off-road biking.
“Our pump track is one of just a few IMBA EPICS rated pump tracks in the state of Ohio,” Burrell said. “It offers a true back-country riding experience.”
Covered bridge
The new covered bridge, located on Wally Road Scenic Byway in Holmes County, replaces a 1993 bridge and is one of the longest covered bridges in the entire United States, spanning 300 feet. The bridge crosses the Mohican River between Arrow Point and Lost Horizon Campgrounds.
“Discover Mohican offers more than 88 miles of hiking and 26 miles of biking trails along with two state parks,” Burrell said. “And that’s just the outdoor space. You’ll also find lodging, shopping, wineries and breweries, restaurants and so much more. We’re not just for the adventurous and outdoorsy types. We offer every level of lodging, whether it’s an off-the-grid, get-back-to-nature adventure you’re looking for or a luxurious, spa-like experience you’ll find it here.”
Discover Mohican area also offers an endless array of shopping opportunities, especially one-of-a-kind clothing, jewelry, art, crafts and antiques. As a gateway to Amish Country, the Discover Mohican area includes the handcrafted furnishings, home décor and baked goods that no one provides quite like the Amish community.
That’s just one more thing that’s unique about Discover Mohican. From primitive cabins and tents in the woods to a newly renovated castle or domes offering suites with a Jacuzzi tub and fine dining and everything in between, Discover Mohican can accommodate any style of recreation.
“There are hundreds of Airbnbs available throughout Discover Mohican areas for your next family vacation, girls’ trip, wedding and any other event in your life,” Burrell said. “If it’s an escape with family and friends to make lasting memories or to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and maybe discover a new activity, we invite everyone to Discover Mohican.”
Burrell said the winter months are a special time at Discover Mohican because of the natural beauty of winter in Northeast Ohio and because there’s always something new happening here.
From fun runs and holiday activities to bird watching, comedy nights at a local theater, and arts and crafts festivals, the calendar at Discover Mohican is filled with outdoor and indoor activities for all ages.
“We pride ourselves on the volume and variety of activities and events we offer here,” Burrell said. “Meetings, weddings, family reunions or just a day to yourself, it’s all happening at Discover Mohican.” w
